SimplyVideo awarded grant via Innovate UK’s Sustainable Innovation Fund

Back in June, the government unveiled the Sustainable Innovation Fund. The £200 million fund will help innovative businesses bounce back in the wake of COVID-19 and safeguard their projects. Handled by Innovate UK, the grant will turn research and development into fully-realised products with a heavy emphasis on sustainability. In short, they’ve allocated it to businesses that will help the UK’s economic recovery and cut carbon emissions to net zero by 2050. We’re grinning from ear to ear because SimplyVideo is one of those companies to secure funding.

What this means for SimplyVideo

The funding allows us to fully invest in the R&D required to hone the SimplyVideo platform. This allows us to get a head start on the market without needing to resort to external investment, crowdfunding, or securing a loan. Going down any of these routes would produce some stumbling blocks. We can’t disclose the backbone of the platform (obviously that’s for our eyes only), and we don’t want to make repayments with funds that should be poured into making the platform as good as can be.
It’s awesome that we’ve secured funding in that it frees us up to develop things more efficiently and at a faster rate. On top of that though, it also validates the concept of what we’re doing. Of course, we’re confident in what the platform can offer. Still, being at the forefront of innovation means we’re exploring uncharted territory. It’s reassuring to know that the UK government shares our confidence in the concept.

How SimplyVideo ticked the boxes

Well, first thing first, we’re British based and owned – a great start when going for a UK grant. More importantly, our platform presents brand new possibilities of video calling. SimplyVideo bridges the gap between wearable devices and the likes of Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, and Zoom. In doing so, it broadens the scope of the video calling.

Here are a few benefits:

Bringing workforces together

Companies across the globe struggle to scale workforces efficiently. Staff flitting around the world deepens that carbon footprint. On top of that, the cost of travel doesn’t do a business any favours either. SimplyVideo provides a platform that joins worlds in allowing remote participation. We’re well aware that there are platforms out there that already allow video calling. But for those using wearables, VC systems, and industry-specific peripherals, they won’t do the trick. You need something else. Something better.

Reducing Downtime

Unplanned downtime costs billions. Should a system in a business fail, an expert may need to physically be on site. This could pose issues if it’s a harsh work environment or said expert is unable to attend for whatever reason. A global pandemic may mean they can’t travel, for instance.

It’s green!

SimplyVideo reduces carbon emissions and helps people fix their problems faster. Simply put, no travel means no CO2 and no waiting!

The world’s businesses have finally discovered that video chats are pretty much as good as meeting face-to-face. But, they’ve also discovered that there are still limitations. In broadening the platform with wearables integration, SimplyVideo smashes through those roadblocks. We provide an immersive experience that helps both the environment and the economy.

Proud to do our bit for the environment

George Sims, our CTO, is a card-carrying vegan and staunch environmentalist. George is incredibly proud of the platform we’ve produced. He’s also the driving force behind our green initiative and sustainability program.

He said:

I’m delighted to have been awarded the grant as it gives further justification to our roadmap and vision. Our mission is to utilise video conferencing for more than merely viewing a series of people’s heads on calls. The pandemic has changed the world forever. We need to start realising the value of multiple video feeds on calls. Wearable and IoT technology use cases continue to emerge and evolve. It’s our job at SimplyVideo to deliver new workflows for video conferencing. I’d like to personally thank the UK government for believing in our roadmap. Their funding helps us bring these products to market sooner than we had anticipated.

George Sims, CTO SimplyVideo

We’re incredibly grateful for this opportunity and would like to thank Innovate UK for the funding. This allows us to continue developing a product that will contribute to improving the nation’s carbon footprint, and then the rest of the world.
